Age and Birthday: Born in 433. Currently aged 48 -- arrived at Budehuc the "long way."
Appearance: Subala is a medium-height woman, slender with firm, wiry muscles from decades of handling rigging and reeling in fish and other treasures from the sea. Her skin is weathered and gold from years in the sun and wind, making her look older than she is, and her grey eyes gleam impishly, making her look younger than she is. She wears simple fisher(wo)man’s overalls, with a sash and simple head-wrap hinting at her long-ago Raftfleet heritage. The hair that pokes haphazardly out from under her head wrap is dark with a purplish-tinge, mixed in with lighter sun-bleached strands and the occasional streak of steel grey.
Weapons: She wields the Pine Wind Sasumata; unlike most sasumata it has a third, middle prong and can be used as a trident/harpoon as well as a mancatcher

History: Subala was born amongst the nomadic riverfolk of Raftfleet in 433. With little parental guidance of her own, the most adult guidance she got was from her childhood friend Lun’s mother Kisara, one of the few beings Subala might have been ever afraid of. Subala was close friends with Lun until Lun purportedly stole Subala’s “boyfriend” (Lun can’t even
remember this happening), and Subala spent much of her teen life instigating (mostly) friendly competition with Lun. Indeed, Subala had a bit of an inferiority complex, irritated that Lun seemed prettier, got the boys’ attention, was a better writer, etc. which spurred on their rivalry. One thing Subala excelled at, though, was fishing, and as she grew from child to woman, spent more time on her own trying to catch bigger and better fish. She was off fishing when Raftfleet went to Lordlake, and was quite miffed when nobody told her. She caught up with the fleet however and met the Prince of Falena, deciding to join his war effort after Freyjadour beat her in a friendly fishing competition at his castle headquarters. Subala fought loyally by the Prince’s and his followers’ sides, even mastering a nasty-dual strike combat maneuver with her friend-rival Lun when she was called in to fight. At the end of the war, Lun went off to join the Dragon Riders, and Subala decided it was time for her to end the competition and move on to seek out adventure on her own. Hearing tales of huge fish swimming the waters to the north, she took a little fishing boat and headed from river to the open sea—and then was nearly lost in a storm.
Fortunately, always a tough girl, she held on to the remains of her boat for dear life until she herself was “fished” into safety by a passing Island Nation trading boat. She decided to repay the captain of the ship by signing on as crewmember—whether he liked it or not! Fortunately, she proved herself an able member. While sea-sailing isn’t the same as river-sailing, she caught on fast, and her strength and agility proved herself an asset to the crew. She eventually earned enough through work on that ship and others to buy a fishing vessel of her own, registered with the Island Nations Merchant Marines (commercial fishermen, merchants, and privateers that the Navy is allowed to draft in times of crisis).
Decades passed, and surely she caught many a big fish, although in her mind, there always had to be a bigger one out there, just waiting for her to try and catch it. And then finally, she saw it—just west of the province formerly known as Kooluk, an enormous, gorgeous black fish with a razor-like nose, leaping out of the water, grinning at her, taunting her. She turned about and went for the chase, the winds filling the Long Sunset's sails as if pushing her toward her goal. Subala tied a rope to her sasumata, and aimed and threw… and it plugged itself into the great beast’s hide. She pulled—and the beast pulled back so hard that Subala went flying, still hanging on to the rope. The great fish began to swim so fast, the crew on Subala’s boat had no chance of catching up with it. Clinging to the rope and harpoon for dear life while whooping with laughter and cries of, “You ain’t gettin’ away from me this time!” Subala was dragged right along with the fish, who swam at an ever more impossible speed up the coast, northwest toward the Zexen Confederacy and beyond…
